What is a DStv Smart LNB?
All DStv satellite installations make use of a LNB (low-noise block down converter). The LNB is the receiving “arm” that you see mounted on your satellite dish. It collects radio waves from the dish and converts these into a signal which your decoder can understand. There are many types of LNBs, ranging from a single LNB (used with our single view decoders) to quad LNBs and UniCable LNBs.
The DStv Smart LNB has been specially designed and manufactured for DStv to meet the growing needs of our non-commercial installations.
MultiChoice recommends the DStv Smart LNB for all DStv Explora and most XtraView installations (when installed in a Single Unit Dwelling, ie. where customers make use of their own satellite dish).
From a technical viewpoint, the DStv Smart LNB combines the features of a DStv Switch into a single UniCable LNB and offers a single cable solution for distribution of multiple satellite signals.
Xrta View 3 x Decoders!
XtraView gives you the ultimate flexibility and allows you to link two or three decoders under the same subscription. This lets you cater for everyone in your family. What’s more – you still only pay one subscription (with an R85 Access Fee for each XtraView decoder).
You can watch sport in the lounge, while the younger kids watch cartoons in the bedroom and the older ones watch movies in the TV room. XtraView is guaranteed to keep the whole family happy.

These decoders are classified as “end of support”.
They don’t have the processing power and memory to deal with our new services. This means your viewing will be impacted as you won’t be able to get some of our channels or you will experience freeze-ups.
We are not able to service these decoders as parts are no longer.
If you are still using one of these decoders, find out what trade-in options are available.
HD PVR 4 Tuner (UEC)
You’ll continue to have access to DStv as long as your decoder is working. You can, however, trade-in your active HD PVR 4 Tuner (UEC) at any of our service centres or agencies for a brand new DStv Explora for only R999 (the normal retail price is R1499). This excludes installation.
If you have decoder insurance and suffer specific damage to this decoder, we’ll replace it with a new DStv Explora and DStv Smart LNB (at no extra cost, as per the conditions of the insurance). Alternatively, you can instead take one of the available trade-in options (at full price). If your SD PVR is still working, you can bring it in now and trade it in for any of the available options (at full price).
You can still access DStv for as long as your decoder is working but won’t be able to receive services that will be placed on our new satellite, which will become available later this year. The new satellite will give us the capacity to enhance our DStv services by allowing us to add more content and channels.
You can, however, trade-in your active SD PVR at any of our service centres or agencies.
You will keep accessing DStv for as long as your Dual View decoder is still working. You can, however, trade-in your active Dual View decoder at any of our service centres or agencies for a brand new DStv Explora for only R1 199 (the normal retail price is R1499). This excludes installation.
If you have decoder insurance and suffer specific damage to this decoder, we’ll replace it with two new DStv HD decoders (at no extra cost, as per the conditions of the insurance). Installation changes may, however, be required.
Why we don’t make dual view decoders any more
We stopped making dual view in a single decoder more than seven years ago as the costs to manufacture this decoder are higher, which would make it more expensive for customers. We were the only Pay TV operator in the world with a dual view decoder, so the parts and software to support this decoder became expensive.
Our solution was to introduce XtraView where you can connect two decoders and still only pay one subscription fee, plus the monthly Access Fee.
The advantage of XtraView is you have two decoders in two viewing environments and if the secondary decoder fails, then the primary decoder is still available. With SD PVR or Dual View, if the decoder fails, both viewing environments are lost.
To get two independent viewing environments, you’ll need to link two decoders together through XtraView. You can either link two DStv HD Decoders or a DStv Explora with a DStv HD Decoder. Please be aware that if you need an installation upgrade (in order to get HD content), you’ll have to carry that expense.
Single View decoder models: 660, 720, 720i, 910, 933, 990
You will keep accessing DStv for as long as your older Single View decoder is still working. You can, however, trade-in your active Single View decoder at any of our service centres or agencies for a brand new DStv HD Decoder for only R349. This excludes installation.
If you have decoder insurance and suffer specific damage to this decoder, we’ll replace it with a new DStv Explora and DStv Smart LNB ( as per the conditions of the insurance). Alternatively, you can instead take one of the available trade-in options (at full price). If your SD PVR is still working, you can bring it in now and trade it in for any of the available options (at full price).
